The advancement of wearable devices and growing awareness in consumers to take control of their own health has influenced the medical industry to develop more and more wearable health technologies. Some of these include wearable fitness trackers, smart health watches, wearable ECG and blood pressure monitors, biosensor patches, etc.
However, there are varied thoughts on the effectiveness and sustainability of these devices in constant monitoring and helping patients to maintain their personal health.
Objective: Determining doctors perception of the efficiency of health monitoring wearables
A total of 101 doctors participated in the survey – General physicians (38%), Diabetologist (7%), Gynaecologist (7%), Pediatrician (7%), and Others (41%)
- 42% of the doctors stated that few of their patients use wearable health devices
- The majority of the doctors (75%) stated that they would recommend their patients to use healthy wearable devices
- When asked how wearable health devices can help them in treating their patients, 30% of the doctors stated that it can aid in real-time monitoring of multiple health parameters, followed by improving follow-up and tracking (25%), preventing complications in chronic diseases (18%) and improving the storage of medical records (15%)
- According to most of the doctors, (30%) health wearable devices would help their patients in getting a better understanding of their own health condition, followed by improving their personal healthcare and compliance (26%), encouraging them for healthier habits (21%), and making them more diligent about health tracking (19%)
- 37% of the doctors believe that lack of awareness and knowledge is the main obstacle to the adoption of these devices by their patients, while financial constraints (31%), technical barriers (17%), and lack of trust and reliability (13%)
According to our survey, the majority of doctors stated that not many of their patients use health wearable devices but they would recommend their patients to use these devices for regular health monitoring. Also, doctors believe that the use of these wearable health devices would benefit not the only day to day monitoring but also in preventing short-term and long-term complications.
Doctors can play a crucial role in educating their patients about the importance of such health wearable devices in disease management.
In addition to improved patient health management, wearable technology can also help in addressing issues in the workplace such as fatigue and stress monitoring. Wearable fitness trackers can monitor stress levels by tracking the heart rate and also regulate sleep patterns. Viewing the real-life data will give employees an opportunity to tackle these issues easily and stay fit.
